My personal feeling is that it is best to get your dog to eat some raw if not totally do it by separate feedings. Doing something to improve the diet is better than feeding a heat processed diet. Whatever method is successful to encourage them to eat it is beneficial.
hope this helps,

My Border Collie didn't want to eat raw meat either (mix of liver, mince etc ala Volhard). I added a bit of egg and molasses to make it tastier, and he seems to like it. Basically, I just made it more Satin Ball-like (he loves those)

When our Border Collie x Ridgeback was 6 mths he ate a pack of ibuprofen tablets & went into renal failure, which he survived. The vet put him on a precription diet of KD dry & canned only, which he hated we had him on barf raw diet. We came to a compromise of half pKD & half home made which he loves. It's been over a year since & he's in wonderful shape, even the vet is impressed with his condition & health. Our mix is all cooked rice, eggs, beans, sweet potato with cooked chicken or mince beef & finished with crushed up calcuim, multi vitiam, kelp & fish oil tablets. All this is human grade product & his treats are bits of stale natural sourdough breads & plain mini wheats. Once a dog has reanl problems, a low protein diet is recommended.

Articles keep referring to starting the raw food diet AND start a proper detoxification program. What is a proper detoxification program for a 9 yr old lab?

Aricker - with some pups it can be a challenge...

Some dogs are not big fans of poultry, I would suggest trying a red meat raw meaty bone to peak their interest. Unlike kibble raw food does not give off the same concentrated smell that they are used to.

Some also enjoy a drizzle of salmon or fish oil. A pre-made commercial food, with or without veggies may be worth a try, often the complete mixture of meat, bone and orgrans can make for a more appealing meal.

Keep with it - in the end it is totally worthwhile!

Please Help

Hi Robin,
My theory about keeping the teeth clean is that it is merely a difference between eating foods that will cause plaque and those that won't. I agree that there is less abrasive action because the dog is not gnawing on the bones but it is the difference between eating popcorn and eating soup. The constant packing of plaque building foods is what causes the damage to the teeth. I also like to give the dog a recreational bone once a week. This helps to also0 keep the jaws, teeth and gums exercised and in good health. Thanks

If the process of a dog gnawing on a bone helps to keep the dog's teeth clean, then how can the "ground bone" that is in the BARF frozen patties keep a dog's teeth clean as there would be no gnawing involved?
