For those ambitious homemade dog food preparers, I have a special tip for killing the majority of organisms. Using just water doesn’t completely clean away bacteria such as E-coli and Listeria which can cause food poisoning. A better solution is to fill one spray bottle with white vinegar and another bottle with 3% hydrogen peroxide, the same strength commonly found in drugstores. Spray the vinegar first. The acidity kills the majority of the bacteria. Then spray with peroxide, which is a strong oxidizer that helps to eliminate Listeria. Then rinse well with water. These precautions are recommended for all produce, including organic products. You will find that this procedure will be significantly cheaper than using commercially prepared washes.
