Bloat is typically a condition that is most prevalent in larger breed dogs, it is a condition that can rapidly cause serious pain and death if not treated as an emergency. A large breed dog that has been fed a commercially prepared dry food and was OK when last seen at night is a pretty good candidate for a bloat condition. The abdomen will distend and resonate like a drum. The dog will suffer greatly and will welcome death as a result. It is interesting to note that bloat is a disease that is believed to be rare in nature and appears to be associated with domestication. It has been observed that a natural or near natural diet will minimize the risk of bloat in susceptible dogs. Thousands of dogs each year are treated for bloat and about 2/3′s of them can be saved by heroic surgery and intensive care. 
 
The larger breeds are most susceptible because of the large amount of food that is required to nutritionally satisfy the animal. Immediate veterinarian assistance is needed at the earliest signs of distress.
