No. To avoid delivery delays, we instruct the FedEx drivers to leave the package at your doorstep if there is no one there to sign for it. Be advised that it is ultimately at the driver's discretion whether to leave the package or require a signature. If the driver feels the package will be unsafe left at the door, they may still require you to sign for the package but this is rare. To avoid this, please leave a note for the driver instructing him to go ahead and leave the package or to let him know where to leave the package.

No. Food loses most of its nutritional value including enzymes and biologically active essential fatty acids once it goes through the heat process of cooking. Essential fatty acids, damaged by heat and oxygen, become slow poisons, causing irreparable damage. Cooking also produces carcinogens and anti-immunogens. Also many minerals, essential amino acids and vitamins become indigestible.

The fear of feeding bones is usually in regards to COOKED bones. Raw bones however, are a natural source of calcium and other minerals. A natural source of calcium obtained from ground bones is far more utilized in the body than from artificial calcium sources such as bone meal. We understand that some pet owners will still have some fears in regards to feeding their pet bones. This is why we grind the bone in our BARF Diets. This prevents any and all risk of choking and/or punctures while your pet still gets all the benefits of bone in their diet.

We advocate feeding your pet twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening.

Any of the BARF® Diets are great for dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds and are complete and balanced for all life stages.

No. All BARF Diet products are specifically designed for dogs of all breeds, ages, and sizes.

The BARF Diet is properly formulated for boths dogs and cats and contains a natural source of taurine (which cats need) in the organ meats we use in our diet. To feed your cat, use the same feeding chart as the one for dogs – basically 3 ounces of food for every 5 lbs. of your cat’s body weight.

We recommend giving your pet our BARF® freeze-dried nuggets. Our freeze-dried nuggets are raw prior to being freeze-dried and still retain many of the essential nutrients and enzymes that raw food contains. It is the same formula as our popular BARF® frozen diets.

Do not continue to feed the specific protein that may be causing the problem. Instead, switch to another variety. For example, you may be feeding the Beef diet so switch to Chicken instead.

• Though uncommon, your pet may have intolerance to other ingredients in our diet. Check to be sure your pet is not allergic to egg or any other ingredient listed.
• Use our E-BARF Plus probiotic supplement to help aid digestion during the transition phase. We recommend one teaspoon for every 5 lbs. of the animal's weight. You can also use plain yogurt or kefir. Feed one tablespoon for every 25 lbs. of the animal’s weight.
• Feed smaller, more frequent meals as your pet may be eating too much, too fast, causing them to throw up the excess food.

It is not unlikely that you will see an occasional bout of diarrhea due to the sudden change in diet. It is usually short-lived and not enough to cause dehydration. Your pet should still be active, happy and ready for the next meal. If diarrhea does occur, there are a few things that can help eliminate this challenge:

• Use our E-BARF Plus probiotic supplement to help aid digestion during the transition phase. We recommend one teaspoon for every 5 lbs. of the animal's weight. You can also use plain yogurt or kefir. Feed one tablespoon for every 25 lbs. of the animal’s weight.
• Remove your pet from the diet and fast for a short 12-hour period to give the bowels a chance to rest and settle down. Then reintroduce the food in a series of smaller meals to slowly break the fast.
• Do not mix the raw food with kibble or canned food as the different digestive requirements will stress the digestive system and lead to more stomach upset.
• Keep the meals consistent and do not introduce a new variety of protein until your pet has completely switched over and adapted to the BARF® diet.
• Call your vet if your pet is running a fever, has frequent diarrhea, is dehydrated or lethargic. Though very rare, these signs could be indicators that your pet may be suffering from a bowel infection.

You can give your pet a recreational raw bone once a week if you wish. Most local grocers or butchers offer whole bones for sale. Just make sure that the bone is the appropriate size to prevent choking. Watch your pet the first few times you feed whole bones to make sure that they do not attempt to swallow them whole.

As long as your pet does not have an allergy to a specific protein, we recommend that you feed your pet a variety of the BARF® Diet proteins. Because your pet is a carnivore, an omnivore, a hunter and a scavenger, his evolutionary diet is based on a wide variety of whole raw foods both of animal and plant origins. By providing your pet with many different nutritionally healthy foods, your pet will, in fact, consume more of the known compounds that various foods offer, including vitamins and minerals as well as phytonutrients and the many other health protectors found in whole foods.

You can determine how much to feed your pet based on his weight and activity level. Puppies should be fed one ½ lb. for every 8 lbs. of body weight. Moderately active adults and seniors should be fed one ½ lb. for every 25 lbs. of body weight. For high performance working dogs, it is recommended to feed one ½ lb. for every 12 lbs. of body weight. Just keep in mind that this feeding chart is merely a guideline and not a rule. Allergies/ Skin & Coat Conditions

Yes. Allergies are the #1 pet health ailment that we encounter most frequently. Vaccines, antibiotics, steroids and any other immune depressing substances are responsible for the majority of allergy issues. The immune system is the very best defense mechanism that the body has. Once it is depressed, the more susceptible the body becomes to allergens and disease. Another main contributing cause of skin and coat conditions is the ingestion of grain-based, heat processed pet foods. The harmful ingredients and additives in kibble and canned food diets (preservatives, flavoring agents, artificial colors, pesticides, herbicides, chemicals, fat sprays, etc.) contribute to the allergic condition. By feeding your pet the BARF Diet - with the addition of E-BARF Plus enzyme supplement with probiotics and Alaska Naturals Wild Salmon Oil supplement with omega 3 & 6 - you will be giving your pet's immune system the boost it needs to fight the allergens that are aggravating and allow the body to detoxify and heal itself.
In extreme cases and for pets that have been fed processed food their whole lives, you might see the skin condition worsen before it improves. This is because the body must expel all the toxins that have built up over the years from being fed a processed diet. The fastest way for the body to release toxins is though the largest organ in the body – the skin. It is important to stick with the BARF Diet though this stage of detoxification as the detox symptoms will eventually subside and the skin and coat condition will begin to clear up.

Arthritis

Yes. The BARF Diet will reduce inflammation, boost the immune system to alleviate pain and increase mobility in arthritic pets. You can also use a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement along with the BARF Diet which will help slow the deterioration of joints.

Cancer

Yes. When the body ingests carbohydrates they are transformed by the body into blood sugar (mostly glucose). Cancer cells thrive on sugar so a continuous ingestion of a sugar-based, high carb diet will create a natural media for the escalation and expansion of cancer cells in the body. By feeding your pet the BARF Diet, with the addition of E-BARF Plus enzyme supplement with probiotics and Alaska Naturals Wild Salmon Oil supplement with omega 3 & 6, you will giving your pet's immune system the boost it needs to fight cancer as well as minimizing the consumption of sugar-based foods which will effectively reduce the cancer disease ratios in the body.

Diabetes

Yes. In fact an animal that is diabetic should be warned against feeding a dry kibble diet because grains will exacerbate hyperglycemia. When the body ingests large concentrations of soluble carbohydrates, like those found in kibble diets, they are transformed by the body into blood sugar (mostly glucose).

Kidney disease

Yes. Kibble and canned food diets provide an inordinate amount of unnatural elements when ingested daily, causing a toxin buildup that will affect the internal organs. As the kidneys and the liver are the organs which deal primarily with toxins and the body's elimination system, the kidneys are the organs most affected by the continuous ingestion of harmful elements found in your pet's diet. The kidney is unique in that it can actually function until about 70% to 80% of the nephrons have been destroyed. During this period, the clinical symptoms of kidney damage (increased drinking and urination, dehydration, anorexia, vomiting, weight loss, anemia, lethargy, and dry skin) are not apparent to your vet until it is almost impossible to reverse. There is some controversy in regards to feeding a high protein diet to a pet suffering from kidney problems. When a vet suggests feeding a protein-reduced diet, it is important to keep in mind that the energy requirements of the animal's body carries a higher priority. Therefore, contrary to current belief, the minimum protein requirement for dogs and cats with chronic renal failure is actually HIGHER than those of normal dogs and cats. Consequently, it is my recommendation that pets with chronic renal failure MUST be on the BARF Diet. It makes sense to feed a diet that is most easily digested so that the kidney has a chance to heal. The BARF Diet allows for a higher utilization of nutrients from the food compared to feeding a heat processed kibble diet as well as a dramatic reduction of toxin buildup in the body.

Oxalate (Kidney Stones)/Struvite Crystals (Bladder Stones)

Yes. An animal that lives in a constant state of dehydration may suffer from crystal formation in the kidney or gallbladder as the toxins are not able to be flushed out of the body effectively. Kibble diets normally contain an average of about 10% water compared to the BARF Diet that is about 70% water content. By switching your pet to the BARF Diet you not only will ensure better hydration of the animal that is properly utilized by the body but the BARF Diet will also improve the pH levels in urine to prevent further crystals from forming. For the Dalmatian breed: It is not recommended to feed Beef diets as this increases the chance of crystal formation.

Liver disease

Yes. The liver is an amazing organ as it has the ability to rebuild itself. Did you know that you get a new liver every 6 weeks? It's all part of the body's cycle of renewal. When the liver is damaged the first step it to reduce any unnecessary stress on the body. This will allow it to heal itself. That is why the BARF Diet is perfect for pets suffering from liver disease – a raw diet is what your pet is naturally designed to eat and will reduce stress on the body to digest and extract the vital nutrients it needs from the food. By feeding your pet a diet he is designed to eat, you will effectively reduce stress on the body overall and allow the body to focus its energy on healing the part of the body that is suffering – in this case, the liver.

Underweight/Emaciated Pet

Yes. Be sure that you are feeding BARF World's BARF Diets which are formulated and designed to meet all of your pet's nutritional requirements and AAFCO regulations for complete and balanced diets. Check the feeding chart on the packaging – you can also find it here. You can increase the food fed per day based on the Average Activity column (or High Performance for working dogs) relative to your pet's weight and instead feed him the amounts stated for his desired weight range.

No. The BARF Diets are complete and balanced and do not require any other supplements to be added to it. Some pets will experience symptoms of digestive upset if fed a raw BARF diet along with a kibble or canned cooked diet. If you feel the need to supplement your pet's meals with a kibble or canned food due to cost, we recommend that you not feed both a raw and cooked diet in the same meal. Instead, allow the animal 5-6 hours to digest his first meal of BARF before feeding the second meal of kibble/canned food. Also make sure to add BARF World's E-BARF Plus enzyme supplement with probiotics to the animal's kibble/cooked food to ensure maximum absorption of nutrients and eliminate any digestive upset that may occur with a split feeding schedule.

Feeding a partial raw BARF diet and partial cooked diet (home prepared, kibble, canned, etc.) will result in partial benefits in the pet's health. Of course 50% raw is better than no raw at all but the best way to feed your pets is 100% raw to be able to get 100% of the benefits of raw feeding.

Nine times out of ten we recommend that you do a quick transition to BARF with your pet where you fast him or her 12-24 hours prior to their last meal and then feed the BARF diet. However, if your pet has a difficult time switching between various diets, has been known to experience digestive upset from time to time, is suffering from a degenerative disease or is a senior, a slow transition is better suited for your pet.

Instructions on how to do a slow switch to BARF:

Day 1:Fast your pet to allow the body to cleanse itself of any toxins and to make your pet eager for the next day's meal.

Day 2:Feed 90% of the old food diet for the morning meal and 10% of the raw diet in the evening. In other words, if you feed two cups of kibble per day (one at each meal) you would feed 90% of that amount in the morning (1 & 4/5 cups) and a small amount of raw food (1/16 of a lb.) in the evening. This first day, the evening meal is light.

Day 3-12:Gradually increase the raw diet each day by 10% and decrease the old diet by 10% each day for the next 9 days. Your morning meals will get less and less each day.

Day 13:On the 13th day, you should be feeding ONLY the BARF Diet and you can begin to feed only BARF in the morning and evening meals. We advocate feeding your pet twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening.

It can be helpful to allow your pet a one or two day fast prior to making the switch to the BARF Diet. This allows the body to detoxify itself of any impurities that may buildup. Fasting can also increase hunger! Hunger can be an invaluable aid in re-training the taste buds of fussy pets. We recommend a 6-day feeding schedule with the 7th day being a day of fasting. The 7th day of  fasting will allow your pet’s body to “reset” for the next week's feeding schedule.

WARNING:Dogs can tolerate long fasts, whereas cats should not be fasted longer than 24 to 48 hours. This is because cats, especially overweight cats, can develop a fatal disease called Hepatic Lipidosis if fasted for long periods.

No. We believe that using USDA sourced ingredient is an adequate supply source as well as helps to keep the cost down on our products. We would never discourage anyone from sourcing organic ingredients for their pet. We have observed that the majority of consumers are not willing to pay the extra costs of using organic ingredients.

Though not organic, our meats are all human-grade quality. We use a blend of farm raised and commercially raised livestock for our diets which conform to USDA regulations of not using any hormones or antibiotics for at least 30 days before slaughter. Our lamb meat comes from Australia – our chicken, beef and pork all come from USDA inspected facilities.

Unfortunately, our fulfillment centers and warehouses are not set up to be able to accept walk-in traffic for order pickups. 

We currently do not have a return program in place to receive back the unused coolers that your order arrives in. You can check with your local recyclery to see if they take styrofoam (polystyrene). You can also check with your local UPS or FedEx store as they sometimes take the coolers in to reuse. Also, many local animal shelters will use the coolers as temporary shelters for pregnant and nursing cats or abandoned kittens and puppies. The coolers also are wonderful for picnics, camping, fishing trips, or tailgate parties as they are lightweight, portable and sturdy.

The amount of garlic in our diet is just enough to be beneficial for both dogs and cats. Garlic is a great ingredient. It is a natural antibiotic and aids digestion. Garlic is rich in vitamins, proteins and trace minerals. It performs as an excellent antibacterial agent and antioxidant. It can also boost liver function; prevent heart disease, cancer and other degenerative diseases. It has a great history with its uses with pets and we include it in the diet in quantities that will not harm your pet.

Each ingredient in E-BARF Plus has been specifically chosen to maximize the absorption of nutrients and aid in the digestive process. We have found this formulation is the most effective at ensuring proper digestion and utilization of nutrients from cooked and raw foods.

The risk of bacterial contamination between dogs and humans exists no matter what diet your pet is fed. Dogs come into contact with bacteria on a daily basis, while playing outside, digging in the yard, or interacting with other pets and humans. To minimize the risk of contamination:

• Make sure to always wash your hands, face and any other area where your pet may have given you a wet kiss.
• Wash working surfaces, utensils, feeding bowls, etc. with hot, soapy water after every feeding.
• Do not leave raw food out for long periods of time. Excess food should be covered and refrigerated for the next feeding or discarded.

No. In fact, kibble may be responsible for a higher incidence of bloat because it stays in the gastrointestinal tract longer which gives it more time to ferment and expand. Unlike dry kibble diets, BARF does not expand when eaten. It also doesn't cause excess gas buildup like processed diets do. This is because a raw diet is easily digested by your pet allowing the body to extract the maximum amount of nutrients from the food (all that remains in the stool is ash and fiber) and less time to ferment in the body since it has a faster elimination time.

Since your pet can now extract the maximum amount of nutrients from his food, all that is left in the stool is ash and fiber. This tends to make the stool firmer and reduce odor (odor being the result of the fermentation of undigested nutrients).

There is no cause for alarm if you notice your pet is not drinking as much water once he has been switched to the BARF® Diet. Your pet is getting the majority of his needed moisture intake from the raw food. In fact, water that comes from the food rather than the bowl is much easier for your pet's body to utilize.

No. The BARF® Diet doesn't stick to the teeth so there is no problem with tartar buildup in BARF® fed pets. In fact, kibble diets cause tartar buildup. Kibble is full of preservatives, flavoring agents, artificial colors, pesticides, herbicides, chemicals, fat sprays, etc. which cause teeth to become yellow and brown in color. It can also cause tooth decay and gingivitis. Whole raw bones are an excellent way to give your pet some jaw exercise and to keep teeth sparkling clean. You can give your pet a recreational raw bone once a week. Most local grocers or butchers offer whole bones for sale. Just make sure that the bone is the appropriate size to prevent choking. Watch your pet the first few times you feed whole bones to make sure that they do not attempt to swallow them whole.

All raw meat products may contain bacteria that could cause illness if mishandled. Treat the BARF® Diet as you would any other raw meat product. Wash working surfaces, utensils and hands with hot soapy water after each feeding. To thaw, place in a container with a lid and defrost in the refrigerator. Food will spoil if left unrefrigerated for an extended period of time. Excess food should be refrigerated for the next feeding or discarded.

Frozen BARF Diet

Our Frozen BARF Diet is good for a full year from the date of production. You can find the “Use By” date labeled on the package. It is also printed on a white sticker located on the back of the box. Make sure to keep product frozen. Thaw before feeding and refrigerate any unused portions to be fed later. Throw away any unused portions after 48 hours.

Freeze-Dried BARF Diet

Our Freeze-dried BARF Diet is good for 18-months from the date of production. You can find the “Use By” date labeled on the package. It is also printed on a white sticker located on the back of the box. Make sure to keep product stored at room temperature in a sealed container to maintain freshness.

E-BARF Plus supplement

The E-BARF Plus enzyme and probiotic supplement is good for two years from the date of production. To ensure maximum retention of nutrients it is recommended to refrigerate the E-BARF Plus powder after opening and avoid storing it in areas of extreme heat.

Safari Raw Wild Salmon Oil

The Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil supplement with omega 3 & 6 is good for 18 months from the date of production. To avoid spoilage and ensure maximum retention of the nutrients it is recommended to refrigerate the Alaska Naturals Salmon Oil after opening. Avoid storing it in areas of extreme heat to avoid spoilage and condensation.

The BARF® Diet can be kept cold in a cooler with ice or dry ice. If this is not feasible we can ease your travel by shipping the BARF® Diet to you anywhere in the United States. We also recommend using our complete and balanced freeze-dried nuggets. They are convenient for travel.

The BARF Diet can be stored in the freezer for a full year from the date of production. “Use By” date labeled on the package. It is also printed on a white sticker located on the back of the box.

The BARF® Diet can be stored in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days without a problem. Any longer than that and they begin to lose their moisture and will eventually spoil. It is therefore recommended to only keep one or two days worth of BARF® in the refrigerator at a time.

For the first 90 days we suggest you strengthen the good bacteria in your pet's stomach by supplementing with BARF® World's E-BARF Plus enzyme supplement with Safari Raw Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil. This will aid digestion and make for better utilization of nutrients. An adequate supply of omega oils will help build a strong immune system and reduce inflammation.

All pets should get E-BARF Plus and Safari Raw Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil supplements for the first 90 days when making the switch to the BARF® Diet. The continued use of supplements along with the BARF® Diet is also recommended for pets that have a pre-existing condition or for those pet owners who want to give their pets an extra advantage in maintaining optimum health and vitality.
