Summer brings many fun activities and events - barbecues, pool parties, and family vacations to name a few. Unfortunately it also brings with it summertime pests like mosquitoes, fleas and ticks.

So this month we've decided to focus on holistic pest prevention. Here's what you'll get in this month's issue of "The Intelligent Pet":

  • RAW KNOWLEDGE: The Importance of Raw Diets for Breeding Dogs - An appropriate topic for FATHERS DAY is a discussion about the importance of feeding a raw diet in preparation for the breeding cycle.

  • GOOD DOG: These Dogs Make A Huge Splash - Dock jumping (also known as dock diving) is an international water sport for dogs.

  • IF DOGS COULD TALK: Holistic Heartworm Prevention That Works - The reality is that the chemical treatments we use to protect our dogs are the same treatments that are poisoning their bodies.

We hope this month's e-zine will give you and
your pets some relief from summertime pests
and give you a chance to ENJOY the summer!

To perfect pet health,

The BARF World Team

Holistic Heartworm Prevention That Works

by Evan Price
Healthy Dog
I will admit that writing this article was an eye-opening experience for me. I set out to find healthy alternatives to the common treatments for heartworm, fleas, and ticks. I went to the websites of holistic vets, thinking that I would find some Chinese herbs or homeopathic remedies.

I was wrong.

What I found were holistic animal practitioners all over the world saying the same things:

   1. We over-vaccinate our pets

   2. The best defense against parasites is a
       healthy immune system

The immune system in a human, dog, or any living organism serves the same purpose. It regulates the status of the body, making sure that everything is in order.

When a foreign invader infiltrates the body, it is the responsibility of the immune system to round up the forces necessary to combat and eliminate the threat. The stronger the immune system is, the easier and more effectively an invader is defeated.

So having a healthy body is not only a good idea, but a top priority. A strong healthy dog will be able to fight off invasion without the use of vaccines.

While I was doing my research, there was an interesting point made. Heartworms and dogs have been around for a long time…long before the invention of heartworm medications like Heartgard or Sentinel.

Yet you have never read a report about wild dogs or wolves being killed in mass quantities by heartworms.

Undomesticated dogs resist parasites, and the few that do get infected are able to live with them, because the effect is so negligible.

But some household pets have succumbed to the disease…and the overwhelming majority HAVE BEEN VACCINATED.

The reality is that the chemical treatments we use to protect our dogs are the same treatments that are poisoning their bodies so much, that they can no longer manage to fight of simple invaders.

Heartworms have only recently begun to cause fatalities in animals.  While it may seem counter-intuitive, the more risk of disease a dog is faced with, the stronger the immune system becomes - and the healthier the dog is as a result.

Parasites have a dependent relationship with their hosts.  They need their hosts to remain living in order to stay alive themselves.  When the relationship between parasite and host turns fatal, something is awry.  It means that something has suppressed the immune system to an extreme degree.

Often times it is the chemical treatment we put our pets through that is the culprit.  While it is no doubt done with the best of intentions, the evidence is becoming clearer and clearer - vaccinations are poisoning our pets.

Research also indicates that a poor diet is a HUGE contributing factor in immune system health.

Luckily, none of you BARF feeders need to worry about that aspect.

Every site I checked out touted raw diets as the best available nutritional source for cats and dogs.

If you want to do a little homework yourself, please feel free to check out the websites listed below:

Until next time, happy BARFing!

These Dogs Make A Huge Splash

by Amber Keiper

Diving Dog
If you’ve ever taken your dog to the beach or a nearby lake, you know that some dogs are just natural born swimmers. My dad’s dog, Duke, for example took to it like a fish to water. At first, Duke was a bit hesitant and just pawed the water the first time he was taken to the lake.

To get Duke to overcome is uneasiness, my dad began to throw a ball out to the water to have Duke go and fetch it. After a few tries, the ball went farther and farther into the lake. Duke quickly became an old pro. Now he starts to whine with anticipation every time we take him out to the water.

There’s one dog sport that’s gaining massive popularity, especially for those water-loving pups in your life.

Dock Diving Dogs

Dock jumping (also known as dock diving) is an international water sport for dogs with events throughout the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.

Sort of like a track and field long jump only with water instead of sand, dock jumping measures the distance a dog can jump from the dock into the pool below. The dock usually measures from 35 to 40 feet in length and sits 2 feet above the water’s surface - the pool itself is usually 4 feet deep or more.

In order to calculate the distance jumped, the distance between the end of the dock and the point where the base of the dog’s tail breaks the water is measured.

World Record Dog Jumps Over 25 Feet

While the sport of dock jumping originated as simple distance jumping, other variations have now been added such as vertical jumping (where the height of a dog’s jump is measured), and speed retrieval (timing how fast a dog can swim to the end of the pool and retrieve the retrieval object).

Dock Jumping Dog Organizations Dog Swims

There are so many dock jumping organizations out there that hold events throughout the world - all with their own rules, events, and competitions:

The Importance of Raw Diets for Breeding Dogs

by Robert Mueller
Dog Licking Image

An appropriate topic for FATHERS DAY is a discussion about the importance of feeding a raw diet in preparation for the breeding cycle.

An important criteria is that you must start with healthy dogs. Poor health of the breeding stock can lead to no pups - or worse - pups with major problems. It is most important for the bitch to be in the best of health.

The importance of the father to perform his duty is to have viable sperm. Therefore it is most important to feed your breeding stock properly for as long as possible prior to the time of breeding.

Ideally, both male and female breeding stock should be raised in such a manner that they are both fully fertile. Ironically, modern breeders have perfected a dietary program using dry food and calcium supplements. This process produces a perfectly healthy-looking male…yet in many cases is also totally infertile.

A poor diet prior to breeding will expectantly lead to decreased conception, a decreased number of live births, and unhealthy pups. Like so many other comparisons, a poor foundation produces poor overall results.

For over 35 years I have witnessed the dramatic differences that a raw meat diet (the BARF Diet) makes for producing superior litters.

The very best advice I can give dog breeders is to start your breeding program by eliminating any processed foods and badly formulated home produced diets and switch the breeding dogs over to the BARF Diet program. The advantages of a BARF Diet regimen are:
  • Proper weight control which can lead to trouble-free deliveries

  • An improved and strengthened immune system

  • A generous and nutritious supply of milk for the pups

  • Healthy, vibrant, lively and thriving pups

  • Less vet visits for the pups or the bitch

In recognition of Father’s Day, let's give our pets the maximum advantage that can be gained through a proper and biologically appropriate feeding program. The BARF DIET provides the most concentrated nutrient combination that produces the best breeding results.
