Leo

A Happy Update On Leo!

Last week, we wrote to you that Leo was in need of a home.  Well, we’re happy to report that Leo has found a new home with Karol Taylor-Lee in Arizona.  Karol had been searching for the right dog to join their family after losing her faithful companion last February. Leo’s story melted her heart so he’s now on his way to Tucson where his new “mom” will be waiting with open arms!

A HUGE thanks to everyone at Brighthaven and the BARF World family for working hard to find this little guy a home!

Environmental Allergies And Stress

By Rob Mueller

It is apparent that certain times of the year create more stressful periods for people and pets. At this time, those who are affected by pollen, molds, pesticides, and other stressors are having a tough time. In the case of our stress-affected pets, it becomes an even more serious issue.

At this time of year, veterinary clinics across the country are dealing with allergy issues as their number one treatment issue. Many factors have been isolated that lead to allergies and are a combination of environmental triggers, food items, and other unrelated triggers. Here is a list of such factors, and notice how varied and complex they are:

  • Genetics
  • Dead and devitalized food (processed)
  • Over-vaccinating with modified live viruses
  • Chemicals in the environment and food
  • Drugs such as cortisone, antibiotics, vaccines
  • Stress
  • Viruses, bacteria, parasites, yeast, and fungi

When reviewing this list of triggers it is apparent that both allergies and autoimmune diseases have the same root cause - an imbalance of the immune system.

I began to think about why the symptoms of allergies occur with our pets in larger numbers than with humans. The reason is as obvious as the nose on your face. The animal's nose is 2 to 4 inches off the ground most of the time, trying to pick up a scent. This is when it absorbs the highest concentration of external environmental factors that cause the allergic reactions. If we were to crawl around on our carpets all day we would be a mess by the end of the day too. The effect of this exposure to our defense mechanisms, namely our immune system, is detrimental and leads to increased stress both to humans and animals.

If you have ever observed someone that is severely affected by pollen and molds, you can quickly see how miserable the person can feel, and it has to affect the stress load on the body. In the case of a dog that has his or her nose to the ground, you can easily see why allergies can explode during the springtime.

We are in the business of supplying a nutritious raw meat diet to the animal in hopes of building a stronger immune system. As a result, we do relieve a lot of the allergic stressors from this season. Many times we receive calls from pet owners that are not getting relief from conventional medications. In the majority of cases, we are able to offer help to relieve the symptoms and resulting stress on the animal. Many people try to blame the animals diet on the increased allergy symptoms. Yes, it is possible that different proteins may trigger a response of this kind; however, it is a proven fact that food allergies represent a very small percentage of the causes. Most times it is environmentally-related and ironically by switching to a raw meat diet we are actually helping to relieve the symptoms.

There are many illnesses and medical conditions that can be worsened by added stress. Relieving the allergic triggers causing the stress is an important aspect of the treatment.

For those that are feeding a heat processed dry diet, you may want to investigate some possible reasons for allergic conditions. These diets contain unwanted levels of chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, aflatoxins, and other grain-based molds than can cause havoc with the sinus cavities, eyes, nose and respiratory system.

I support the theory that allergy conditions that are prevalent all year long are triggered from the contaminants of the dry, heat-processed dog food. Switching to a more biologically appropriate, natural raw food diet (the BARF Diet) can frequently reduce the allergy symptoms to tolerable levels. At the same time then you are reducing the stress levels on the animal.
