Hardcore dog lovers like us have heard it all:
“Wow! Your dog eats better than I do.”
“There's no way I would spend that much on my dog.”
“Oh, he's just a dog, not a person.”
These sorts of comments (sometimes coming from otherwise well-meaning friends and family) can be irritating and sometimes even a bit upsetting for us to hear. But they shouldn't be.
You should be proud of the fact that your beloved dog is not just a “pet” and is treated as a member of the family. She's your loyal companion and your best friend. That's why we treat our pets as well as we treat ourselves (and yes, sometimes we even treat them a little better than that!).
It comes as no surprise when we hear of doctors and veterinarians coming together and agreeing upon various treatment methods for people and pets suffering from common health ailments. Allergies, digestive problems, arthritis and cancer can plague both canines and humans alike.
Dr. Bruce West, world-renowned health expert and author of Health Alert understands this fact. While Dr. West's specialty is in human health, he does understand that our pets' health is just as important to us as our own.
This week's Intelligent Pet article is written by Dr. Bruce West and explores the best course of action for pets suffering from arthritis, hip dysplasia and other joint problems.

Your Dog: Arthritis and Joints

“This is not a miracle. But only yet another example of how whole-food supplements and good fresh food can fuel the body naturally to good and sound health.” -Dr. Dyanna McCain, Veterinarian Naturopath
Dr. McCain is one of my advisors who often surprises me with one of those “right out of leftfield” letters or treatment plans. A while back she sent me a letter entitled,“A Case of a Samoyed Named Stoli with Hip Dysplasia.” Dyanna related a story of a beautiful 5-year-old Samoyed (dog) who was on multiple prescriptions for pain and scheduled for hip surgery for hip dysplasia. (If you have had a dog with hip dysplasia, you know just how heartbreaking it can be to watch your dog suffer.) The only known medical treatment is surgery-which may or may not be effective.
The dog's owners came to Dr. McCain with open minds and “ready to embark on a journey of pure, whole-food nutrition for Stoli's well being.” They agreed to treat Stoli for 6-12 months. Treatment consisted of replacing his grain and chemical filled kibble with a raw diet; weaning him off prescription drugs; ceasing annual vaccines; and using bone-building, osteofactor, raw-food concentrates and supplements.
Within a month Stoli's guardians reported that he was in less pain. Two months later he was off all painkilling prescription drugs. And a month after that he was “completely pain free, happy, and active.” Stoli was kept on his protocol for another 8 months, then x-rayed again. The x-rays showed that his “hips were back to normal!” - something considered impossible in most veterinary circles. After that time, he was kept on a raw-food diet, weaned off all supplements but Calcifood by Standard Process, and followed for the next three years-and he is still doing great.
Which brings us around to your dogs. You can help stop their suffering. By using a raw-food diet (I like the BARF [biologically appropriate raw food] diet™) and raw-food supplements-especially bone-building, osteofactor supplements-your dog can recover from arthritis and all types of joint problems. Stoli's problem and cure was anything but your everyday case. But the lesson is that your dog does not have to suffer.
The BARF Diet and Whole-Food Supplements and Extracts
The first thing to do is to get your dog off disease-causing, sickness-promoting, and pain- inducing dog food and kibble. That means all store-bought dog food and kibble. Replace it with Dr. Ian Billinghurst's BARF diet. It consists of raw meaty bones and raw foods. Get the book, The BARF Diet, by Ian Billinghurst. Or go to www.barfworld.com for the details. Aside from starting to heal your dog's joint problems, this diet will also encourage the healing of all kinds of other health issues such as problems with the skin, fur, teeth, mouth, bowels, and stomach, as well as mange, weeping ears and eyes, gum disease, and much more.
The next thing to do for your dog in pain is to start feeding him raw-food, bone-building, joint-normalizing, osteofactor supplements. For any joint problem, including arthritis, we use the following protocol with great success:
Give your dog (in the same plate as his BARF diet food):
- Calcifood Powder(1/2 tbsp for small dogs to 1 heaping tbsp for large dogs),
- Biost(2 tablets for small dogs; up to 4 for large dogs),
- Ligaplex II(2 tablets for small dogs; up to 4 tablets for large dogs), and
- Cataplex F(1 tablet for small dogs; up to 3 tablets for large dogs).
Since these supplements are all made from raw food, meat, marrow, and bone, your dog will happily and heartily eat up all this nutrition along with his meal. Simply start now, be regular, and continue for 4-6 months before reevaluating. Most dogs will begin to get better within 30 days. But healing damaged joints can take months.
And just what is in these supplements?
How about raw bones with the marrow; minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, and manganese to increase ligament strength; amino acids; enzymes; trace elements; liver, heart, bone, spleen, adrenal, and kidney extracts; omega-3 fatty acids from flax oil; RNA; vitamins from carrots, pea vines, wheat germ, oats, mushrooms; and much, much more.
Dogs are interesting when it comes to natural healing. They often respond better than we do. They have no “hang-ups.” They have fewer emotional issues. They are generally more active than humans. They rarely complain. And their bodies were designed to heal.
Right now I am trying to heal my own dog of an “incurable inherent, genetic problem” that dogs of his breed suffer from-weak tendons and ligaments with resultant severe joint problems and pain “that can only be corrected with surgery.” This condition is even more “incurable” than hip dysplasia. The problem just surfaced, and I will keep you posted.
Over the course of my career, I have helped hundreds of pet owners cure their pets of a variety of problems. The treatment is almost always the same-take out the poisons and put in the healing nutrients. With joint problems, I use the protocol in this article.
So don't just let your dog suffer. Don't just cover up the pain with drugs or surgeries. Do not believe that dog food is healthy for your dog. And always feed your dog what he needs to get well. Sound a lot like my philosophy on treating humans? Well, as Dr. Joel Wallach from “Dead Doctors Don't Lie” says, “We treat them like dogs, but they do get better.”
And best yet, you won't have to force-feed this nutrition to your dog, or try to trick your dog into eating his vitamins. These supplements are made from real, raw bones, and your dog will happily eat them up. So start helping your dog now. And if you need help yourself with chronic pain, arthritis, joint problems, osteoporosis, or more, feel free to drop me a line.
