After 32 years of developing diets and raw food formulations for carnivores, I am amazed at the common misconception that just because dogs and cats are domesticated carnivores (raw meat eaters) we have also “domesticated” their nutritional needs as well as their nutritional requirements for peak performance and health.
Although selective breeding can alter body size, coat color and behavior of an animal, domestication and selective breeding has not altered the basic physiologic processes and nutritional requirements inherited from the wild genetic foundation of today’s domestic dog and cat. The major producers of commercial dog and cat foods produce a combination or predominantly cereal and low grade meat by-products that will grow and maintain a dog or cat if fed enough. With proper vitamin and mineral supplementation these diets are adequate for the dogs and cats owned by 85% of the general public. The fact that they will grow and survive on these commercial foods is only a tribute to their ability to digest a wide variety of materials.
For the remaining 15% of pet owners that expect peak performance and top body condition in our pets and working animals and want to feed them absolutely the finest diet possible as foundation for a preventative health program, good is just not good enough. Domestic dogs and cats are carnivores and must be fed a carnivores diet (raw meat) to gain the total expected benefits and rewards for longevity and good health. I have witnessed 32 years of domesticated carnivores gaining the true advantage of eating a biologically appropriate diet ( The BARF DIET ).
