We always try to describe the advantages of feeding a raw meat based diet ( BARF diet ). Let’s reverse the discussion and try to describe what is wrong with feeding a heat processed kibble diet. All grain based, heat processed food (all brands) contain damaged amino acids/protein, damaged vitamins and minerals and therefore have questionable bioavailability. They have mutilated trans-fats and no enzymes or antioxidants due to the high application of heat.
The ingredient list may show the use of bone meal which is a very sterile ingredient that possibly contains high contaminant and lead content. The proteins are damaged as are the vitamins and minerals. They also have no enzymes or antioxidants. I call it a dead ingredient.
Grains contain refined carbohydrate with damaged nutrients. They have been found to contain molds, fungus, aflatoxins and phytic acid which may inhibit nutrient absorption. Again no enzymes or antioxidants. Dogs and cats have no nutritional need for grains. It merely provides a very cheap source of ingredient base. We always caution against the use of denaturing chemicals( ones that have been used to keep pet food out of the human food chain making them not fit for human consumption. The same danger exists when artificial preservatives, dyes and flavorings are used. I have noticed lately a significant increase in kidney disease. Could we now be seeing the long term affects of these toxic ingredients?
The natural vitamins and minerals have been modified and many are rendered inactive and have a low bioavailability. Vitamin supplementation has been added to the final product but as an un-natural ingredient it is less absorbed. In some cases they over supplement to make up for this.
The kibble diets win hands down as a convenience feeding item. For our fast paced culture we find that feeding a product that can stand open for 2 months without spoiling is convenient. The question remains— Is it healthy?
