Avoid Tempting Festive Rawhides This Holiday

With the holidays quickly approaching, pet parents will be filling puppy stockings with all kinds of fun things. Tennis balls, squeaky toys, and bones usually make their appearance in our beloved companion’s stockings, but be extremely wary of rawhide bones! It may be tempting to purchase that cute. Holiday themed rawhide chew from the pet store, but this doggy favorite is one to avoid for the holiday season... and for good!

Rawhide not only has some serious dangers associated with chewing it, but it may even contain nasty chemicals that could cause serious health issues in your furry friend. These treats that are often sold at big box stores and are meant to pull at your heart strings, are typically bleached rawhide and by-product materials that are formed into holiday colored bones or stretched into holiday friendly shapes like stockings or gingerbread men. Although dogs may go crazy for them, you should avoid giving your pet rawhide treats entirely. Arsenic and formaldehyde, as well as adhesives that are used to make the fun shapes, as well as other potential chemicals can be found lurking in this type of chew.

Additionally these chews can cause a variety of issues associated with its ingestion. Chewing a piece of rawhide that is too small can cause choking in your canine companion.  We all know how quick our pups work to get through certain chew toys, and it can be tough to keep a close eye on them. Swallowing a piece of rawhide too large on the other hand can expand inside your puppy's stomach, putting them at risk for a potential blockage. As they chew, the rawhide gets soft and becomes easy for them to swallow. Ingesting too much rawhide, even safe sized pieces, can cause gastrointestinal complications as well. All these problems can cause abdominal discomfort and pain at the very least, and a potentially expensive trip to the vet.  So what to give your fur baby this holiday season?

Some better alternatives are bully sticks.  For many dogs, bully sticks are a bigger hit than rawhides. Though these chews are typically more expensive than rawhide, they are made in a much safer manner, and the “quiet time” they provide pet parents makes the price tag worth it as well!

Naturally shed antlers are also a great alternative to rawhide. These chews are collected after deer, moose and elk naturally shed them, so they are cruelty-free. Because these are naturally shed, they contain no chemicals. They also don’t splinter like some other chews. Your pup will go crazy for one of these in their Christmas stocking!

We have a variety of  chews and treats here at BARF World that are not only safe but your four- legged friend will go crazy for them this holiday season and into the New Year.

Raw Food Tip:

While there are many gift ideas are sure to please your pet, there are of course so many more things that you can do to show your dog how much you love them.  Take them out for a long walk, go to their favorite park, pamper them with extra hugs, kisses, and belly rubs.
