BARF - It’s More Than a Funny Name

The hate and discrimination we get about our name is typically from people who have no knowledge or understanding of the true meaning behind the acronym B.A.R.F.® As many of you may already know, it stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones And Raw Food. True BARF®ers and raw food feeders understand the meaning and importance of a raw food diet for dogs and cats.

BARF - It’s More Than a Funny Name

Quite often we get questions and statements like:

  • Did a 4 year old choose your name?
  • You really need to change your name!
  • Couldn’t you have chosen a better name?
  • I bet your food smells and tastes like actual barf (vomit)🤮

The hate and discrimination we get about our name is typically from people who have no knowledge or understanding of the true meaning behind the acronym B.A.R.F.® As many of you may already know, it stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones And Raw Food. True BARF®ers and raw food feeders understand the meaning and importance of a raw food diet for dogs and cats.

Since the beginning of time, dogs and cats have eaten the remains of animals in the wild. This includes bones, internal organs and any contents that may be in the animal's gut. This still remains true with modern dogs, who tackle bones with ease and enthusiasm. The entire system of a dog and cat  is built around bones, and it relies on them to remain healthy and live a long life.

Bones, like any other component of the body, are made up of living tissue.  They are a complicated source of a wide range of nutrients. Minerals embedded in protein can be found in raw bones and contain enzymes that are natural antioxidants and anti-aging factors. They also contain a healthy source of fat. If the bone is from chicken or pork, the fat is likely to be abundant in important fatty acids. Fat-soluble vitamins are present in addition to the fat content. Marrow is a high-nutrient mix of blood-forming components, particularly iron, found in the core sections of most bones.

You see, the statement that concerns us the most is when a pet parent will say, “I will NEVER feed my pet your food because of your disgusting name!” I feel bad for these pets. Rather than giving the benefits of enjoying a healthier lifestyle by feeding their pets the best raw diet on the market, pet parents succumb to the idea of feeding their fur babies cancerous and dead food out of a bag. Have you ever noticed that kibble fed dogs at about the 5 year mark are subjected to severe allergies, digestive issues, pancreatitis and cancer? It’s unfortunate that some pet owners are not willing to look past the name. Our pets can’t make the decision to be healthy and improve their own health. It is our job as pet parents to make the right decisions for them. The BARF® Diet can make all the difference in your pet’s health and existing ailments.  You may think that our name is a joke, but your pet’s health isn’t. So, get over the name and make the right decision to do what is best for your pet’s health.
