Complying with the FDA

There has been a shift in the pet food industry.  Pet Food Manufacturers all over the US are having to comply with new regulations put forth by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).  As many of you may know there is zero tolerance for contamination in pet food. Believe it or not, the regulations for pet food are a lot stricter than the food we purchase for ourselves.

The FDA has worked tirelessly to avoid any cross-contamination related to the level of bacteria that can be found in pet food. These new regulations to which Pet Food Manufacturing facilities are having to comply have created a challenge for all raw food companies. Many pet food brands have shifted their best business practices to conform to the Zero Tolerance of bacteria in their products.

If you have recently purchased our products, you may have noticed a difference in the appearance of our products.  We wanted to let you know that there is no effect on the integrity of our products. The new regulations have caused BARF® World to HPP our products. Thus, changing the color and appearance of our meat.

As you can imagine, BARF® World, and most raw companies, agree that cooking is not an option for eliminating bacteria. Cooking destroys beneficial bacteria and living enzymes. Raw pet food producers are turning to alternatives such as high pressure pasteurization, bacteriophages or irradiation in an effort to achieve the FDA requirements.

High Pressure Pasteurization (HPP) is an increasingly popular non-thermal pasteurization process which exposes the product to 87,000 pounds or more of hydrostatic pressure per square inch. Extreme pressure destroys single-cell membranes of harmful bacteria such as salmonella, listeria, e-coli and clostridium botulinum which can be detrimental to human health and the health of immunocompromised pets.

  • HPP is highly effective in eliminating harmful bacteria although it may not eliminate bacterial spores.
  • HPP is not a new process and is already being used all over the United States for human consumption items such as juices, milk and purees.
  • Compared to cooking, HPP is less likely to change the appearance and taste of the food.

In the 20 plus years that BARF® World has been in business, not one single case of contamination has ever been reported however, in an effort to stay in business and to continue providing your pet with the most nutritious diet on the planet, just as Mother Nature intended, we have added this extra step in our manufacturing process.

Raw Food Tip:

Living Enzymes are proteins found in raw foods which help the body function. Enzymes are only beneficial to the body if they are living. Once food is cooked or processed, it no longer contains living enzymes. Foods without living enzymes put stress on the pancreas to produce the necessary proteins to function. Living Enzymes in a raw diet restore, repair, and maintain health. Animals replenish their enzymes systems by eating raw unprocessed foods. Our convenient diets retain their living enzymes, along with phyto-chemicals, antioxidants, and unprocessed amino acids. Your pet’s long term health depends upon these factors to ensure a long and healthy lifespan.
