A Raw Diet for Pet Dental Health

February is Pet Dental Health month. We often have inquiries about the benefits to feeding a raw diet, specifically how it can improve pets dental health. With new emerging diets and products on the pet food market, it can be challenging to navigate and figure out what the best option is for your pet to improve not just their dental health, but overall health and wellbeing.

Dental Benefits from Raw

Feeding your pet a raw diet is the most effective way to ensure your pet doesn’t have dental issues, and it can even reverse some existing damage due to a kibble fed diet. One of the most common misconceptions is that feeding a kibble diet is beneficial to pets' dental health due to the “crunch” associated with the kibble. This can result in the chipping and cracking of teeth, just like with humans when we eat a super crunchy food. If it is uncomfortable for us humans, it is bound to be just as uncomfortable for our pets.

The key reason that feeding a raw diet is beneficial for dental health is that a complete and balanced diet, such as the BARF Diet, is formulated on the basis that dogs are descendants of wolves, and should be fed a diet that reflects this.

Unlike a BARF World® diet, kibble contains unnatural high levels of carbohydrates, which contain ingredients unnatural to what wild dogs and wolves eat. The result; bacteria begins to form which can cause a range of dental concerns such as tooth decay and gum disease.

By giving your dog a raw meat diet it helps reduce the bacteria in your pets’ mouth, keeps plaque levels low, and freshens breath. Raw diets help prevent tartar build up because raw diets do not stick to the teeth, unlike diets that are high in carbohydrates and fat/chemical sprays. From my own personal experience with my fur baby Jax, he has been on a raw diet his whole life and has shiny white teeth with no buildup or dental concerns.

Raw Meaty Bones & Antlers

The best way to prevent dental disease in your dog is by providing the best raw pet food diet, in addition to raw meaty bones and or elk antlers. These are both great options in providing an additional boost and overall benefit to your pets dental health.

When your pet is chewing away on a raw meaty bone, they have to chew through some meat and cartilage. Once this is broken down, the bone helps scrape off any plaque build up. Raw meaty bones keep wild dogs and wolves teeth in optimal shape, and they can do the same for our beloved four legged companions. On the other hand, elk antlers are a natural chew that not only keep your pet occupied, the marrow helps keep their teeth clean.

By feeding dogs the diet they were designed to eat, a raw meaty diet that isn’t full of carbohydrates & fillers, the results will be shocking! Incorporating meaty bones and or elk antlers, will help promote your pets overall dental health and extend the quality of your fur babies life.

One of the tips we recommend and is tried and true with our own fur babies is putting your dog’s food out and letting them salivate for a few minutes before feeding. Saliva promotes dental health and can help protect tooth enamel and can reduce gum disease.
