Fasting Facts

Whether you are new to raw feeding or are ready to return, you may be wondering, “What is the best way to switch my dog over to Raw?”.  Here, at BARF® World, we recommend  Two options: Whichever option you choose, I encourage that you fast your pet before starting them on a Raw Diet.

  • Rapid Switch
  • Slow Switch

Many pet owners have a hard time with the concept of fasting their beloved pet.  They fear that Fido is going to starve. This is a very normal and valid reaction, however allowing your pet a one or two day fast prior to making the switch to the BARF® Diet is helpful.  Fasting allows the body to detoxify itself of any impurities that may have built up. Fasting can also increase hunger! Hunger can be an invaluable aid in re-training the taste buds of fussy pets.

Additional situations when fasting is encouraged is when fever is a factor in an illness.  You can usually fast your pet until the temperature returns to normal; assuming that the animal is in reasonable condition.

Fasting is one of the oldest and most natural methods of healing.   Fasting allows the body to break down and expel older wastes that may have accumulated in the liver and fatty tissues.  The body also gets a chance to unload the products caused by inflammation; cleansing the body of unwanted toxins, giving it a chance to rejuvenate itself and the cells have a chance to repair and restore themselves.

For more information regarding switching your dog to raw, please contact one of our BARF® World, Inc.  Raw Food Specialists by calling 800-282-2273 or emailing @ info@barfworld.com.

Raw Food Tip:

WARNING: Dogs can tolerate long fasts, whereas cats should not be fasted longer than 24 to 48 hours. This is because cats, especially overweight cats, can develop a fatal disease called Hepatic Lipidosis if fasted for long periods. Fasting for puppies is not recommended. Seek advice from your veterinarian for more information on fasting.
