Feeding Dogs and Cats - What is the True Cost?

Don’t be misled into thinking the cheapest food you buy is going to be the least expensive. There are multiple considerations in figuring the true cost of raising our furry friends beside what you pay for a bag of pet food.

Start with pet food ingredients. Like ingredients in any product, their cost is in direct proportion to their value. Value in animal foods is based on the nutritional components, the absorption of   those nutrients and digestibility factor of each ingredient, which are priced accordingly. The higher the value, the higher the cost. Additional considerations which affect the true cost of raising dogs and cats are additives, supplements, hygiene, cleanup, litter size, body condition and veterinary care. The only formula that matters and won’t deceive you is: total cost per day per dog = “TRUE COST”.

Taking a look at the pet food industry there are four categories of pet foods that are offered. They start from the most widely used and seemingly inexpensive to the least used and seemingly most expensive… but “are they”?!

Generic Commercial - Dry, Semi-Moist and Canned

The predominant ingredients are usually plant matter; corn, soy, wheat, barely, rice with some cooked meat. This is the “typical” pet diet, along with table scraps and junk food treats, that cause many of the nutritionally deficient ailments of today’s pets. These conditions include weight problems, skin and coat problems, digestive problems, large stool volume, odor problems and urinary problems just to name a few.

Premium Commercial - Dry and Canned

The predominant ingredients are usually cooked meat and bone, chicken by-products, and fish along with plant matter such as corn and soybean, etc. This diet, though somewhat more digestible, is still lacking many of the natural nutrients that were once there, due to extreme temperatures in the cooking process.

Scientifically Formulated Rations - Dry and Canned

The predominant ingredients are very similar to the premium commercial with varying dietary formulas to treat specific ailments usually caused by either a generic or a premium commercial diet. These diets are also cooked, some ingredients double- cooked and often fall short of their intended goal to help relieve the ailment.

Fresh RAW Meat Diets - Preserved by Freezing or Freeze-Drying

The predominant ingredients are fresh muscle meat and organs which include liver, hearts, kidneys, stomachs, spleens, lungs and other organ meats, which are the first choice of carnivores in the wild. Because wild carnivores eat in entirety their whole prey including the organs, they do eat small amounts of plant matter from the stomachs and digestive systems of their prey. To mimic their diets in the wild, small amounts of plant matter are added to our raw diets to balance amino acids, calorie requirements and add fiber for stool formation.

Our fresh meat raw diets are brought to our furry canine and feline companions frozen or freeze-dried in forms such as our chubs, patties, and nuggets. No matter the shape or size, the goal is to preserve the nutritional integrity of the oldest form of wild feeding on earth, by avoiding nutrient damage done by cooking. This diet has been served by Mother Nature successfully to wild carnivores for thousands of years- FRESH (uncooked) meat.
