Help! My Dog Has Stopped Eating

Frequently, I hear the comments from pet parents that their dog has been aggressively eating our (raw meat) diets for a few weeks and then, for some reason, decided not to eat it. The pet parent’s immediate concern is that there must be something wrong with the food.  However, after some Q & A time, the pet parent usually reveals that there are other factors as to why Fido has stopped eating his raw diet.

I have been promoting raw diets for over 35 years, and I must say that I have never seen a dog starve who has been eating our food. So why does he/she decide not to eat the food?  Could it be that maybe the dog has been nutritionally satisfied?

We can relate this situation to our own feelings of satisfaction. Many times I’m not hungry because I have been satisfied by what I previously ate. This is no different with our pets. The bottom line is that they will eat when they are ready to eat. If there is nothing wrong with the food, then it is a degree of satisfaction that explains the concern.

During my early years in the Raw Dog Food industry, I was involved with promoting raw meat diets to Zoos all over the world. Part of my responsibilities involved working with the exotic animal vets. This experience was a valuable experience and through this learning process I became aware of the need for fasting. A pet’s body often requires a day of fasting to detoxify and cleanse itself of possible pathogens and toxins.  This fasting period is an important and natural bodily process.  If you do have a pet that suddenly stops eating his food, it may just be his/her natural ability to detoxify and say, “I’m totally and nutritionally satisfied”.

I have observed that most pets that have been converted to a raw food diet will eat their food aggressively, and as pet parents, we are pleased to see how satisfied they are with the meal change. However, once they become nutritionally satisfied, they will have a tendency to back off from their food.  Do not be alarmed, Fido will eat again, when he is hungry! Knowing this in advance, you won’t be as concerned when/if this happens. This is not a common occurrence, but it does happen occasionally. Here are some helpful tips if you ever find yourself in this situation:

  • First, determine that the food you are feeding is not spoiled.
  • Check for visible signs of thawing. (The center of the patty or chub is completely thawed).
  • Sometimes it may be a matter of temperature - where the dog is used to kibble, and a colder meal variation is not desired.
  • In really difficult feeding scenarios, I would recommend that the patty be slightly heated (pan seared) and then each day, heat it less and less until the food is back to room temperature.
