It's Safer Than You Think

There’s been a lot of news lately about the recall of kibble causing the deaths of more than 70 dogs due to contamination. So here at BARF World, we are here to give you information on why a raw diet can be safer and more beneficial to your pet!

An excerpt of the official announcement on fda.gov:

“Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. is expanding its recall of certain dog and cat food products produced in our Chickasha Operations Facility to include all dog and cat pet food products made with corn products because those products may contain aflatoxin levels which exceed acceptable limits.

Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus, which can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet food. At high levels, aflatoxin can cause illness and death in pets.”

The news media has presented far more detrimental feeding scenarios from eating dry kibble than from eating a raw meat diet. Studies show higher amounts of bacteria in raw food diets, however they also showed that some dry foods contained the bacteria as well, showing that bacteria or other types of contamination as in the recent recall of pet food is universal. There has been a plethora of contamination cases from kibble fed dogs, so the problem cannot be pointed directly at raw fed diet.

There is no such thing as a completely safe diet for the domesticated dog and cat whether it is a dry food, canned or natural raw meat diet. However in our experience, animals raised on our formulas for over 35 years have experienced improved health and vitality over all the other canned and dry formulas. The advantages are that a raw diet has not been heat processed which is the biggest detriment to all dry and canned products. The advantage gained is a diet that has its nutrients preserved as nature intended and still has some enzymes and phytonutrients that create essential life giving and life extension qualities. As far as the safety for your four legged companion is concerned, mother nature has blessed your pet with a digestive system to handle potential bacteria and pathogen concerns. This includes stronger stomach acids, and a shorter digestive tract.

But are there risks involved in feeding a raw meat diet as pet owners? Of course there is and that is why we give specific instructions for safe handling and feeding practices. In general, we always suggest that you handle the raw meat diets the very same way that you handle raw chicken that is being cooked for your family. Sterilizing dishes, washing hands often, using disinfectants, and observing safe handling procedures is the key to eliminating potential hazards. As long as you take the necessary sanitary precautions to minimize any risk by being hygienic and careful when handling raw meat then you should be fine.
