Preparing in Case of Emergency

Or Disaster With Your Pets

Do you have a plan for your family in the event of an unexpected emergency? A natural disaster that may affect your home and family is always something that we should be prepared for.

Disaster can strike at any time, anywhere in the world. It is important to not only be prepared for yourself and your family, but for your pets as well. Here are a few tips that will help in the event of an emergency.

Always have a prepared pet emergency kit including these items: at least 2 weeks worth of food, water, medications, and a basic pet first aid kit.

The ASPCA recommends placing a rescue alert sticker on or near your front door, alerting rescue workers that there are animals in the home, how many and what types of pets.  (To receive a free sticker and pet safety pack visit: https://secure.aspca.org/take-action/order-your-pet-safety-pack )

Arrange and plan for a safe place to go if evacuation is necessary. You can contact your vet for a list of preferred boarding kennels and emergency shelters and facilities. Some hotels also accept pets. Have emergency vet info on hand wherever you are. Making a plan ahead of time will prevent more complications during a chaotic situation.

Be sure that your fur baby has up to date necessary vaccinations, tags and identification and have a copy of their medical records handy or with you when you’re traveling.

Remember pets tend to flee or wander during a crisis situation so be sure to keep doors secure and leashes in a convenient location.

It's also a good idea for your four legged companions to have extra treats, comfort items, and toys to occupy their time.

An unexpected crisis situation can be stressful, but being prepared by following these tips can reduce distress and help keep you and your pets safe.
