Recommended Feeding Amounts

When it comes to getting started on the BARF® Diet, there are several common questions that arise. One of the most frequent is, “What do you recommend as a feeding amount?” There are several things to consider when customizing a feeding plan for your pet such as, activity level and goal weight.

Here are some frequently asked questions:

  • What is the recommended feeding amount for my pet that is (blank) weight and (blank) activity level?
  • What should I do if my dog is still acting hungry?
  • What should I do if my dog is losing/gaining weight?
  • When should I stop transitioning diets and fully feed raw?
  • Why is the freeze-dried feeding amount less than the frozen?

These are all valid questions and concerns to have when getting started on the BARF® Diet and we understand how important it is to ensure our pets have the best nutrition possible! We recommend that the feeding amount is roughly 2% of the total weight of your pet. For example, if your dog weighs 95 lbs, the recommended feeding amount is 2 lbs a day, or the equivalent of one of our Frozen Chubs. This is just a recommendation, and if you do notice that your pet is losing or gaining weight, this can be slightly altered by increasing or decreasing the feeding amount.

If your pet is underweight and you would like them to gain weight, we recommend working towards the ideal weight goal of 5 lb increments. For example, if you have a 95 pound dog, and want them to be down to 80, we recommend first starting with 90 pounds and then updating the feeding amount every five pounds until you've reached the ideal goal weight.

Your pet’s feeding amount also varies between activity levels. For puppies and high activity level dogs, the feeding amount is going to be higher. Once a puppy turns 1 year old they are no longer considered a puppy. At this the feeding amount tapers off and can be fed as an adult.

We can also customize a feeding plan for your pet at no cost! There is also a feeding guide located on our website that allows you to enter your dog's specific weight and activity level to get the recommended feeding amount.
