Training a New Pup

Within this past year, we have added three new puppies to the BARF World® Team, Sonic, Gizmo & Rufio! It was a very exciting time, but also came with some challenges. Adding three additional pups to our crew required a lot of extra patience & training.

Crate training & potty training are very crucial to start early on to prevent things such as separation anxiety, chewing & accidents. In the early stages accidents are inevitable. This is why it is crucial to use positive reinforcement when they go outside or listen to commands like:

  • Sit
  • Stay
  • Leave it
  • Come

These commands are consistently used with our office pups. Here in the office, we use BARF® Freeze-Dried Nuggets as a positive reward for good behavior. Socialization with other people and other dogs is also important when your pup is young. This is a key part of your puppy’s development and training.

We have had quite a few customers calling in wondering what we recommend for crate training or something for their pups to chew on when they are teething. Due to popular demand, we recently released our Chew & Fill Set. This includes an 8 Pack of Cow Hooves & 1 Poochie Butter. This makes a great option for crate training or to deter your pet from chewing on furniture, slippers, etc. Simply fill the Cow Hoof with peanut butter & put it in the freezer. The Cow Hoof can also be filled with the BARF® Diet or reconstituted Freeze-Dried Nuggets

Training your pup can also be a great bonding experience for you and your pet. Teaching them new tricks also allows you to connect to your pet as they learn that you are the leader of the pack! It is important to keep training between 5 to 10 minute increments to prevent over stimulating. When teaching a new trick, a helpful tip is to physically show them how to do a certain trick instead of telling. It is also recommended if you ever find yourself feeling frustrated during training, to take a step back and attempt again later.

We also often get the question, “Is BARF® safe to feed to my new puppy?”. The answer is yes! We have done a fast switch with each of our new puppy’s and they have transitioned to their raw food with ease! In fact, we even noticed a difference in their stools within the first 24 hours! The great thing about BARF World® is that our diets are safe to feed at all life stages. Give us a call if you would like a free consultation and we can customize a feeding plan for your new pup today!
