We Have A New Puppy…..Now What?

After the joy and excitement of the new addition to your family comes the reality of training.  January is “National Train Your Pet Month”, so what better time to talk about training your new puppy!

Our family recently welcomed our newest addition, Sonic.  He has brought us all so much joy as well as the added responsibility of basic obedience training.  Whether you are like us and have decided on DIY home training, or like the idea of hiring an outside trainer, either way, pet parents will play a huge part in successful training.

Whether you are just starting out with potty training or perhaps leash training, or if you are already on to teaching your pup how to fetch or learn new tricks, all pet parents know that treats are a huge part of the training process.

When your dog bites at your hands, all he wants is your attention. He wasn’t born to know that you want him to sit and ask nicely for attention, so you have to teach him. Instead of scolding him, ask him to sit. When he obeys, be sure to  reward him with a healthy treat. We use BARF® World Freeze Dried Nuggets and Sonic’s favorite, Beef Liver Snacks.  He also loves the Chicken Breast and Lamb Lung Snacks, too.  And always remember to give him an abundance of praise as well.

Sonic turned 16 weeks this week and he is already making leaps and bounds in his training. When he has to go potty, he will paw at the bells by the front door, letting us know he has to go out.  He knows that once he’s done his business, there is a yummy BARF World treat waiting for him.  He also loves to show off all the new tricks he has already learned.

Training a new puppy doesn’t have to be difficult. It can actually be a fun time for the entire family. However, remember to stay consistent and keep in mind that while training, you are creating a very special bond with your pet.  One that will last a lifetime.
