Weight Gain & Weight Loss

Oftentimes, we will get the question “Why is my dog gaining or losing weight?” For pet owners this can be a scary situation to be in. You may even wonder if you are doing the right thing when it comes to your pet’s nutrition. This is why we’ve got you covered! Making the switch to raw is crucial for your pets health & wellness and we can guide you with a customized feeding plan.

There are certain factors such as breed, weight, type of protein & activity level that can contribute to weight loss or gain. In some instances, certain breeds tend to be on the leaner side, and vice versa.

Activity level and age also plays a major role in weight loss or weight gain. If your pet has an increase in activity level at any given time, it is recommended to feed more. Check out our feeding guide that includes the recommended feeding amount for different types of factors: Puppy, High and Average activity level.

Recently, there was a customer with a very high level activity dog that was struggling with keeping weight on. Here are some tips that we recommended to help him get his active pup satisfied. We recommended:

Weight Gain:

Olive Oil or Natural Peanut Butter

Switching to a fatty protein such as Lamb

Slowly increase the feeding amount per meal by 4 oz.

Adding Oats or cooked Quinoa to the raw diet

Once our customer made the switch to our Lamb and added oats he was able to get his pup back up to her goal weight! On the flip side, here are some tips for weight gain:

Weight Loss:

Cutting kibble and carbohydrates out of the diet.

Switch to a low fat, lean protein, such as BARF World Chicken or Turkey

Consulting with a vet to make sure there are no underlying health concerns

We always say that pet parents know their fur baby best so you use your best judgment in adjusting your pet’s feeding amount. If you can feel your pet’s ribs we recommend feeding more. If you can’t feel your pet’s ribs at all then we recommend feeding less and adjust the feeding amount based on your pet’s goal weight. If any questions or concerns come up, give us a call at 866-282-2273 or send us an email to info@barfworld.com. We will work with you to customize  a feeding plan to help get your fur baby feeling happy and healthy. You may even want to give our 90 day challenge a try so you can see the difference that a raw food diet will make on your pet!
