Why Small Dogs Bark More

Recently, I began to notice that some dogs, especially smaller breeds, tend to bark more than others. I have especially noticed this, in social settings where they are the smallest dog in the room. I began to grow curious as to why this may be, and if anyone else had shared this same experience. Turns out it is very common and actually has a name. It is called small dog syndrome or napoleon complex.

Rufio, one of our own Brand Ambassadors, is one of the youngest and smaller dogs in our pack. He has a very sweet personality and loves being with his family. He also loves to play with his other buddy, Sonic.

Recently, there were some setbacks and changes in his daily routine. Some of the tricks and commands he once knew, he no longer responded to, which resulted in us taking a different approach.

Although Rufio's recent stubbornness could be attributed to him being a puppy, we had to adjust and make some changes in his daily routine to refocus on his training. All while also making sure to be patient and not overwhelm him all at once. The training process with a new puppy can be stressful on everyone involved, which is why taking breaks and reinforcing positive behavior is crucial.

The best way to reinforce positive behavior is through high value treats. We use Freeze-Dried Cat Nuggets as treats or our new Salmon Bites to show him that he will be rewarded for positive behavior. It is important to remember that during the initial training process, they will not learn new behaviors overnight. It often takes time to develop a relationship and build trust with your fur baby. Training in small time-frame increments help keep your pup focused on their task at hand. As a team we work together to train our furry office assistants.

Rufio has been doing very well with his focused training and adjustments to his routine. He continues to improve everyday. If you find yourself or your fur baby feeling overwhelmed, take a short break and reevaluate later.

If you have any questions, or would like to learn more about our Freeze-Dried diets or treats for training, give us a call at 866-282-2273 or send us an email to info@barfworld.com and we will be happy to help.
